Im clueless when I comes to modern cars, still driving what's left of my 89 Fox.

Working on getting a new car this year and I really like the looks of golf & gti. Even after going to vw.com I still don't understand the difference between them.

Help.

They are essentially the same. The GTI has a different (better) trim package, and you can get beefier engines in them. I think the options for the Golf are:

    2.0 inline 4 or 1.9 TDI (diesel)

    while the GTI has:

    1.8T or VR6.

If you have the money, get the VR6. If you don't care about the engine, or want an automatic, you might be better off with a Golf.

    Hope this helps.

yeah, gti is like the sport golf. if you go for gti, vr6 is a gas concern (especially where gas prices are headed), comparably to the 1.8t which is also a good performer. golfs come in 4-dr which gtis do not.

Mmmm, true. I hadn't thought about the gas prices. It cost me thirty fucking dollars to fill me poor jetta this morning. Come on VW, where are those fuel cell cars you guys drove over the Alps a couple of years ago?

Go get yourself a Golf TDI. Its better than you imagine. Its better than most Americans will believe.
          Good mileage - 40+ and excellent power/torque.

We don't need no steekin fuel cells. (they're a myth anyway.)

Its a true shame that the GTI in recent years have turned into just another trim level to the Golf.

Thankfully VW realized that they killed their drivers' car. In 2003 the 20th Anniversary Edition (20AE) GTI was introduced. This was the first true GTI since 1992. All the ones in between here heavy, floaty, luxo-boxes. Then in 2004, the R32 was introduced. In truth its not a GTI but a GTI++. I drove one yesterday and the sound of the engine alone is absolutely incredible. Its the most fantastic sound you'll hear coming out of anything not manufactured by Ferrari or Porsche.

I've got a 20AE GTI and absolutely love it. However, I'm considering getting the R32 simply because of the engine. The rear suspension and the all-wheel drive isn't bad either.

Sorry to hear about your GTI. I can imagine how hard it is to go back to regular cars.

      What year was yours?

It was a 97, one of those "lofty boxes" lol. But still, broken sun roof, mostly functioning A/C, rust everywhere, 165k, I loved it all the same. It was my first car, and I'll probably be buying a mk4 GTI soon. I just can't stomach the '06.

The MkV GTI really doesn't look special. The upcoming R32/R36 doesn't look that great either:

Am I the only one who thinks it looks like a 90s civic hatch back??? The thing is disgusting. Then again, I don't much like the new Jetta either... Who the hell designed these ugly flowy things?! They need to take a hint from the 90s Ford Taurus designers, whose designs got changed rather quickly after sales TANKED when they started using those stupid elipses. Give me my box!!! I want a nice, square box for a GTI... Its what I love...its what makes VWs DIFFERENT.

You're not alone. I think it looks like the wrong version of the Civic - a taller version. The new Jetta looks like butt too, in my opinion.

I really think that VW has lost the plot. The new Passat isn't bad but it could be a little better.

Did you know that VW lost their designer, J. Mays, to Ford? I really think that had a long-lasting effect.

I just got an 02 Golf- and it has the 1.8 Turbo in it. I absolutely love it! From what I am to understand is they don't do that anymore.

One of those cases where gently used was better than new to me... I need the 4 doors, but dont like sedans. This is a perfect fit!

You're right the Golf 1.8T was only around for a short time in the US. If you want that engine, you have to get the GTI or Jetta.

I love the utility of the hatchback. Its the sane person's SUV :)

              AMEN!

this is why i love my Rabbits: in pickup and GTI form. in the last 15 years, there were only 3 months i didn't have a GTI in my stable and those 3 months were spent looking for one. funnest cars ever!
